In “Covert Affairs” Season 1 Episode 9 “Fool in the Rain,” two people go on a journey that ends with both in the same place. Annie winds up in Niagara with her sister. An Iranian gentleman named “Yahya” Rahimi also arrives by the Falls.
Annie’s sister and her husband are having a fight because their second honeymoon to Niagara has been ruined because of the husband having to go to something that might get him a new job. So the sister takes Annie, who has been told she needs a vacation by Joan after the latest incident with Brian.
In the meantime, Yahya, who is part of an Iranian trade delegation in Toronto, really decides he needs to have a life free of the evil Mullahs and decides to bolt. Having seen Tom Clancy films, Yahya believes that the CIA can help him.
Arthur and Joan are having marriage counseling, which is hard for the counselor when they have to argue about things having to do with national security and why, on many occasions, they have to lie to one another. But the Yahya situation arises, putting a temporary end to the bickering. Who do we have on the American/Canadian border?
Why our favorite operative, Annie Walker, of course. So instead of Harrison Ford or Ben Affleck, Yahya gets Annie.
Annie must not only evaluate Yahya’s intelligence to see if it makes him worthy of being resettled in the United States, but also concoct a cover story for her sister about an Iranian dissident who has information on stolen artwork of interest to the Smithsonian. Sister is unwittingly a great help for the op by keeping Yahya occupied, listening about his lost love, whose family fled to America after the Shah fell.
The intel turns out to not be as Yahya had advertised. He told the CIA that it concerned Iran smuggling weapons in violation of sanctions. Some news. But it really concerned Yahya and a few others smuggling into Iran liquor and cigarettes, something many Iranians desire, but which are forbidden by those thieves of all joy, the Mullah.
Not a problem. Joan and Arthur agree that this means that Yahya would be a great operative back in Iran.
It’s the back in Iran part that Yahya really finds objectionable. Annie is not happy about it either.
To make a long story short, Yahya flees, almost gets killed by his own people, but is rescued by the quick thinking and quick kick boxing Annie. His cover blown, Yahya will not be resettled in America and will maybe be reunited with her lost love.
Two other things occur.
First, Annie starts having flashbacks about the last day in Sri Lanka with Brian. She begins to wonder who that guy who was talking with Brian on the beach the night before Brian split. Come to think of it, he really looked a lot like Jai.
Second, Arthur finds Auggie out about his little rogue op with the Impetuous Girl Reporter. His irritation is mollified by the fact that he can get back at his least favorite crusading journalist. Auggie passes along a story about a shipment from tsunami-ravaged Indonesia to Africa that only 17 people in the world know is a lie. Dutifully, the reporter checks it out and finds out that it is a lie. Now Arthur knows that one of the 17 people is the source of the embarrassing leaks. Auggie, however, now no longer has a regular outlet for sex. But at least Annie is still his friend, and his bosses know he has a job well done.
