Many Cowboy Chic style home decor shops sell chic furniture pieces embellished with silver conchos. However, this concho embellished headboard project takes just a few hours to create but mimics the much more expensive design found in stores.
For this project, you will need:
– Tape measure
– Butcher paper or craft paper
– Masking tape
– Electric saw to cut plywood
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
– 1 1/2 inch thick upholstery foam (available at upholstery shops or craft supply shops)
– Enough faux leather or faux suede fabric to cover the plywood, foam, and wrap around by three inches on the back
– Silver conchos (available at craft supply stores or online)
– Fabric punch
– Epoxy glue
– Industrial sized stable gun and staples
– Newspaper or a drop cloth
To start, cover the area in which you will be working with newspaper sheets and/or a large drop cloth. Use a tape measure to determine how big of a headboard you will be creating. Usually, the measurement will be one or more inches wider than the mattress you will be placing it over plus tall enough to stick over the top of any bedding and/or pillows. Draw this measurement onto a sheet of butcher paper or craft paper to use as a template. Add as much or as little detail (curved, square, etc.) to the top of the design as you wish. (Note: the more detail the harder it is to cut the wood to shape and size.)
Place your template on the sheet of plywood and secure it with masking tape. Cut around the outside of the template using an electric saw of your choice. Gently sand the edges of the wood piece using a sheet of medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust on the headboard piece with a tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth.
Trim the piece of 1 1/2 inch thick upholstery foam to the size of the board. Adhere the foam in place on the board with epoxy glue. Dry overnight. Trim the piece of faux leather or faux suede fabric to cover the plywood, foam, and wrap around by three inches on the back. Punch the fabric in the areas in which you wish to install the conchos. Insert the pin side of the concho into each of the holes. Use a small hammer on the backside to secure the concho.
Lay the concho embellished fabric piece over the foam and board. Adhere the leather or faux leather fabric to the headboard with a staple gun. Install the headboard to the wall over the bed, as desired.
