You can quickly and easily make funky, swirled color crayons by melting broken pieces of crayons in muffin tins. This is a great way to use up all the broken crayons your children have in their craft boxes. If you don’t have enough broken crayons, you can buy some new boxes of crayons at the dollar store and use those. Just make sure you only use non-toxic crayons. It will say non-toxic on the box.

To start making your muffin tin crayons, preheat your oven to 275 degrees. Then peel off all the paper from your crayons and break the crayons into pieces one inch long or smaller (the smaller the pieces, the more marble effect you will get when they melt). You can also use any crayon shavings that gather up when your kids sharpen their crayons.
Add about 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil into each muffin tin and spread it around with your finger. Then add enough broken pieces of crayons to fill your muffin tin about 1/2 full. This will be the equivalent of about four crayons per muffin tin. If you want, you can use a new crayon as a guide and line up the broken pieces along side it to know how many pieces it takes to equal four crayons.
When you add the crayons to the muffin tins, remember that whatever colors you put on the bottom of the tin will end up being the top of the new crayon. But don’t be too fussy! Just add whatever colors you want and the crayons will come out great.
When your muffin tins are full, place the tin in the oven and bake your crayons for about 5 to 8 minutes. Be sure you keep an eye on them because they will melt quickly. As soon as they are melted, take them out of the oven and stir each tin a bit with a toothpick just to make sure there are no air pockets. This will also help marbleize the crayons.
Now you must let the crayons cool completely. Just let them sit on the counter until they are cool and hard. When they are hard, simply turn the muffin pan over and pop them out! Your kids will have beautiful crayon disks that they can use in their art work!
These muffin tin crayons make great party favors or stocking stuffers. You can also make some to give away as Halloween treats to your trick-or-treaters. And you are not limited to round disks. Muffin tins come in many shapes. As long as the tin can be put in the oven, you can use it for crayons.
Please be careful when handling the hot, melted crayons. Don’t let kids stick their fingers in the mixture because it is super hot! Always have an adult around to supervise.
