The landing area associated with a staircase often gets overlooked when it comes to decorating. If not overlook, too often is the staircase landing not given the kind of decorative effect that can make it stand out from the rest of the house. Confined spaces need not be overlooked when it comes to interior design. In fact, confined space gives you the perfect opportunity to make a robust statement with your décor.
A long staircase with a tunnel-like design that has three walls around it affords the chance to engage in some eye-popping design. Are you familiar with M.C. Escher? Escher is the master of optical illusions and a staircase as describe provides an interior space that can come alive with Escher-like illusions without making you crazy like it would in the living room. It’s actually rather easy to recreate Escher’s blocks that appear to be coming forward one way or sinking inward the other way. You just need to get your hand on an Escher block image and design it to suit your staircase style.
A less complicated way to decorate your stairway landing is with zig-zagging colors that mimic your pursuit up or down. Create wavy geometric lines in vivid color and set them off with white blocks between each colored line. Allow the colors to veer out of sigh from atop the stairs when you reach the landing.
A wall landing is also a place where you can make a statement about your interests. Decorating nothing but one wall always makes a dramatic impact. Your landing wall could be the site of a collection that hangs from the walls. Or it could be the spot where you post up a framed movie poster of your favorite film. A shocking color like hot pink or lavender could adorn the wall that is surrounded by neutral colors. A good idea if you do the one wall painting theme is to match the color with carpeting on the steps themselves.
Trim the stairway on the outside with a two-tone paint job that creates a stepping line to follow the path of stairways situated over a plain base coat. If you can paint your stairway handrail, repeat the color of the stepping line on the handrails.
A slightly curving staircase can be a thing of surprise to those visiting your home for the first time. Have your visitors hit the landing to be surprised by a suit of armor or a mannequin or a stuffed animal. Dress up the mannequin in seasonal-suiting attire like a witch outfit in Halloween, a Santa outfit in December and swimwear during the summer.
