When it comes to helping children learn all about the seasons Fall is certainly one of my favorites. During this time you have the opportunity to do a lot of hands on projects, and combine nature with the different subjects you are helping your children to learn. Below you will find a few simple ideas on how you can really make Fall come alive for your child.
It’s all about the leaves
A nature walk is really a great way to allow your children to see what happens outside during Fall. During your nature walk you can have them collect leaves. I have found it easier to use plastic Ziploc bags for collecting leaves on your nature walk. Have the kids pick up different colored leaves, and different types of leaves. When you return home you can then have the kids make sketches using the leaves. One fun project is to use tracing paper to trace the imprint of the leaves onto construction paper. Then they can cut out the leaves, and write some of the sight words on them. Hang the leaves on your bulletin board, and you will suddenly have a Fall themed word wall.
During your nature walk you can have the kids take a look at all the different animals they say. Have they taken along a sketch pad, and they can draw a picture of what they see the animals doing. This would be a good time to talk about what the animals are doing. When you return home, you can easily look at nature books, and read all about the animals they have observed.
What shall we wear?
During the Fall season you will find that the weather is changing. It is a lot of fun to go over with the kids what they will be wearing during the Fall months. Talk about how it changes from what they were wearing doing the summer months. This is a good way to introduce how we learn about the weather.
Using nature to learn math
You can also include math into your nature lesson. They can collect acorns, and leaves and then count how much hey have. You can even have them put a few leaves on their own homemade tree. You can easily use the leaves to add the numbers together.
Fall can help books come alive
During the month of Fall you can take the kids to the library, and look up books that pertain to Fall. It is really is a great way to get your kids interested in Fall. Kids will really learn to love books if you help them get excited about them.
