Did someone fall asleep watching the 1960 version of the movie Psycho? Well it certainly helped to inspire this weeks episode entitled “Reflection of Desire.”
Rhett (Robert Knepper) is an older man still living with his mother (Sally Kirkland) and kidnapping women in his spare time. With a fanatical admiration for classic film, he dresses up the women he kidnaps to resemble his mother when she was an actress staring in a film entitled ‘Reflection of Desire.’ His odd signature is to remove the lips of the women before he kills and disposes of their bodies in the allies of Georgetown.
The look and feel of the show was very retro, complete with a sound score that would have been befitting of that era. While the look was great, Rhett was beyond disgusting, he was possibly one of the worst unsubs that the BAU has come across this season. It isn’t revealed until the end that the lips he removed from his first victim using a simple razor blade, is used on the cadaver of his mother. Not only is it reminiscing of the movie Psycho, but it did have an underlined incestual tone. This could have left some viewers with a mixed feeling of fright and nausea.
During “Compromising Positions,” Garcia (Kristen Vangsness) served as trial run liaison for the team, only to realize it was more difficult than she thought to do two jobs at once. She received another chance to fill JJ’s (AJ Cook) shoes this episode speaking in front of the media cameras about the case to lure Rhett out of hiding. Garcia’s been trying to keep her theater acting a secret that only Hotch (Thomas Gibson) knew about, but the rest of the team found out when Hotch asked her to be the media liaison. She change her hair from red to blonde and dressed a little more 1950’s appropriate complete with true-red lipstick. While Garcia did a decent job with the media- given she was thrown in front of the cameras with little prep time- the BAU is better off not attempting to fill JJ’s position just yet, especially since Hotch promised to get JJ back.
The only problem that this episode had was that Kevin (Nicholas Brendon), Garcia’s doting and loving boyfriend was not in attendance for her performance. Shame on you Kevin!
