The Episode Begins
From the opening scenes of this episode we are bombarded with questions. Who is the mysterious woman in the shadows? And why is the killer forcing the kidnapped woman to act out lines for him while he directs? More intriguing is a cut scene of Penelope with jet black hair who offers us some interesting food for thought. What truth is suffocating Penelope and what happened when she was 18 to take her humanity?
The kidnapped girl wakes in a car in the rain, only to be suffocated and killed by the man who was directing her. While a new scene with Penelope comes up that shows her shooting a man who she claims raped and killed several women, and who also did the same to her but she survived; we are relieved to see it is all just a play. Unfortunately for the kidnapped girl, we can’t say the same.
This Episode’s Quote
Most episodes of “Criminal Minds” starts off with a quote. This episode offers a quote from Marilyn Monroe. “Fame will go by and , so long, I’ve had you, fame. If it goes by, I’ve always known it was fickle. So at least it’s something I experience, but that’s not where I live.”
Penelope The Chameleon
One of the things that keeps us coming back to “Criminal Minds” is Penelope Garcia and her ever changing wardrobe and hair styles. This episode has her hair running the color chart from black, to red to glamorous blonde. To speak at a press conference aimed at the unsub, Penelope goes blond and rocks a Marilyn Monroe style makeup look complete with bright red lips.
The Details Unfold
Over the course of the episode we find out more and more about the killers methods and means. A glamour shot of the victim was sent to the press before she was killed. She had a wadded up bit of old paper that is typed in old courier stuffed into her throat and it has the same words on it as are found scribbled on a wall at the scene where the body was found. Her lips were removed post-mortem.
The Hill Ripper Gets Theatrical
It appears that the Hill Ripper, as the killer is dubbed by the press, is keeping the victims three days to play out three acts of a play in which his victim is the star. The killer turns out to be the son of ex movie star, May Walden. Her pregnancy by a co-star ended her film career. Right after the team saves the latest girl who was kidnapped, we get the biggest surprise of all; the killer’s mother is dead and he carries her body out as the BAU and local police close in on him at his Georgetown home.
Our Questions Answered
The woman in the shadows must not have been there at all since she turned out to be deceased. He was never good enough in his mothers eyes and he never lived up to his fathers fame, so he continued to act out scenes from his mother’s one movie with victims he kidnapped, looking for the right one and for love. Penelope has been acting in a play that she had kept secret from her co-workers, but in the end she is onstage while her team members look on from the audience.
“Criminal Minds” airs on CBS Wednesdays at 9 pm ET.
