I love many of the beautiful yarns on the market today, but they are so expensive. The yarns I am most attracted to are the ones that have a long feathery fringe or short fringe that resembles eyelashes. I decided to take the plunge. My frugal-self wouldn’t allow me to purchase more than one. I wanted to see how easy it was to work with and if I could make a whole design with one skein. I bought one skein of Bernat-Boa, a short fringed eyelash yarn.
The project I chose was a crocheted scarflette. The scarflette is a wide collar that is worn around the neck. It can be worn over a blouse or sweater and adds extra warmth, like a scarf, without the bulk.
The yarn was difficult to work with by itself. The strand is very thin and very light. It did not take me long to realize one skein would not be enough for the project, so I started over. I used a strand of coordinating worsted weight yarn held together with the eyelash yarn. That blend turned out to be the perfect thickness and the project was completed with a small amount of yarn left over.
Calico eyelash yarn, one skein
Off-white worsted weight yarn, one skein
K- crochet hook
1-inch wide satin ribbon, 48 inches
Hold one strand of off-white worsted weight yarn and one strand of calico eyelash yarn together. Chain 10.
Double crochet in the third chain from the hook. The beginning chain will count as the first double crochet stitch now and throughout the pattern. Double crochet in each remaining chain across the row for a total of nine double crochet stitches.
Chain three and turn. Double crochet in each stitch across the row.
Repeat step 3 until the piece measures 23 inches long.
Chain one. Working along the long edge of the scarflette, single crochet twice around the post of the last double crochet stitch made. Continue to single crochet in the ends and around each double crochet post on the long edge.
Single crochet twice around the last double crochet post on the edge. Single crochet in each chain stitch at the end of the scarflette.
Chain one. Working along the other long edge of the scarflette, single crochet twice around the post of the first double crochet stitch. Continue to single crochet in the ends and around each double crochet post.
Single crochet twice around the last double crochet post on the long edge of the scarflette. Single crochet in each double crochet stitch at the end of the scarflette. Slip stitch in the first chain one of the round and finish off. Weave in the ends.
Cut a 48-inch length of 1-inch wide cream satin ribbon. Lay the scarflette with the length running horizontal on your work surface. Weave the ribbon through the stitches along one long edge. Weave the ribbon a 1/2 inch from the edge and evenly spaced along it’s length. Bring the ends of the ribbon out the same side of the scarflette. This will be the outside of the scarflette. Place the scarflette around your neck and gather it on the ribbon. Tie the ends in a bow at the front of the neck.
