The St. Louis Cardinals are coming to Wrigley Field for the last series between the Cubs and the Cards. So far the Cubs have dominated this year, including winning on the Cardinals’ home turf. This is something that hasn’t gone on since the mid to late 1980s.
Jonathon Mayo has posted an article at the Chicago Cubs’ Website titled “Wainwright eyes 20th victory against rival Cubs.” In early August, Adam Wainwright was cruising toward a 20-game season. In fact, he was 17-6 with a 1.99 ERA. However, now he is 19-11 with a 2.45 ERA
Basically what we have is a struggling pitcher (Wainwright) and a pitcher for the Cubs coming back from injury, Tom Gorzelanny.
You may recall about 20 days ago (well alright, exactly 23 days ago), Gorzelanny took a screaming line drive to the left hand. It looked like it hit him in the head the way he went down. He is making his first start since that tough day.
While Wainwright has been struggling, he is no one to overlook. He has, after all, won 19 games and still has a decent ERA. However, against the Cubs, he has not done particularly well, sporting a 5-4 record and 4.26 ERA.
Gorzelanny’s record is not too good. It is 7-8 with an ERA of 3.90. Further, he is 2-3 against the Cardinals with an ERA of 3.92.
So who is going to win this game? Rivalries, you know, have little to do with what is going on in the season.
I have to say that the Cardinals are going to beat up on the Cubs in this series. First of all, in this first game, Wainwright has a lot of desire to get his 20th win, and Gorzelanny is an unknown entity. In any event, you figure that Quade won’t let him go past five innings.
However, the real issue I think is that while perhaps not eliminated technically (and I really don’t know if they are or are not), they are going to be because they stand too far back considering they just have 10 games left as well. When they met the Cubs in St. Louis recently, the Cubs swept them.
The Cardinals are going to be up to returning the favor.
