Something very special is happening in Chicago. The Cubs are having a magical few games. The Cubs shut out the opposition again 1-0. While Tom Gorzelanny did not get the win, he played great ball, pitching six scoreless innings.
Carrie Muskat has posted an article on the Chicago Cubs’ website titled “Nady’s bunt, Snyder’s single give Cubs win.”
In watching the way the Cubs won the game, you see how they have come together to play. Xavier Nady bunted on his own to literally sacrifice himself to help the Cubs win. The Cubs’ ninth-inning drama involved Aramis Ramirez getting a single. Then the aforementioned Nady bunted pinch-runner Darwin Barney to second, after which Brad Snyder singled home the winning run.
This work was done in large part by young players who were using selfless thinking. Snyder in particular is a real rookie, having spent a lot of time in the minor leagues.
The Cubs, by taking three out of four games, have left the Padres close to death as far as postseason hopes go. They are three games behind the San Francisco Giants, with just three games to play. Luckily, if there is a “luckily,” they play the Giants, so they, to a degree, control their own future. However, even if they sweep the Giants, they still would have to play in a tie-breaker.
The Cubs are now 22-12 since interim manager Mike Quade took over. That is a .647 winning percentage. While that is far from an entire season, 34 games is over 20 percent of an entire season, and that is not bad. I think it is safe to say that Mike Quade has nailed down a contract, at least for next year. More and more players are coming out and saying how much they hope he comes back.
As Muskat reports, “The Cubs have been stingy, having now given up three or fewer runs in 13 straight road games…”
The Cubs are heading to Houston for the final series of the season. A sweep wouldn’t surprise me. Quade and the Cubs players are doing what they should be doing. They are having fun and helping each other.
Baseball is about team. The Cubs are playing as a team.
