Just when you thought Election 2010 couldn’t get any creepier, the news today brought more ugly mud slinging into the NY Governor’s Race.
Today Republican Carl Paladino alluded to his opponent Andrew Cuomo’s “legendary prowess”. This is a reference to Cuomo’s very public divorce from Kerry Kennedy, although the “official” story is that Cuomo was actually the injured party and his wife was the one who was unfaithful. Yikes! This sounds like the stuff of a sick soap opera.
This comes, of course, after Paladino’s own admission that he fathered a child out of wedlock and that the daughter is now ten years old. According to news reports, the information was presented by Paladino to his long-time wife at the funeral of their son. (Surprise!!!!) Oh, boy. Enough sleaze, already.
According to today’s Boston Herald, Cuomo has agreed to debate Paladino before the election. The latest Quinnipiac poll shows Cuomo ahead at 55% of those polled with Paladino at 37%. These weak poll numbers and the fact that Paladino is having trouble, according to the Herald article, raising additional funds for his campaign have Paladino eager to go nose to nose with Cuomo in a debate with the hope of changing this negative tide.
What will be the topics for the debate? Will the personal garbage be put aside long enough for the voters to hear some actual discussion of policy? Kinda makes a person just want to sit this one out and stay home watching soap operas. Isn’t there a book out called “Don’t Vote. It Just Encourages the Bastards”? Haven’t read the book but the title sure sums up what a lot of voters are feeling.
Election Day 2010 can’t come soon enough for this voter. The sleaze factor or creep factor will mercifully come to an end on Tuesday, November 2. Then, who knows? Somehow, New York State will have a new Governor and maybe things will take a higher turn. At the very least, this ugly campaign will have come to an end and the voter can go back to watching soap operas for their daily dose of sleaze.
