Cuts & Brews is a new business that recently opened in Denver. It is located at 1407 S. Broadway and they are offering haircuts for men and women. They opened for business on August 24th, 2010 and are offering free soda, coffee or tea for patrons while they wait for their haircuts. After their application for a liquor license has been approved, patrons will be able to get a glass of wine or a mug of beer while they wait. The owners are Ryan Williams and Mikael Morgan and I recently had the opportunity to talk with the two men about their business and how the idea came about.
AC: What made you decide to open your own business?
Ryan: We both worked for The Warranty Group and they made the decision to relocate the company to Chicago in April of 2010. I had recently bought a house in Aurora and my family all lives here in the Denver area. I didn’t want to move to Chicago.
Mikael: Same with me. I recently got married and neither my wife nor I wanted to move away from Colorado. We had just bought our first home, here, too.
AC: How did the idea for this kind of business come about?
Ryan: Initially, the idea was a joke, but the more we talked about it, the more it sounded like something we both wanted to do.
Mikael: Yeah, It was a joke at first, but after running it by family and friends, it started sounding like something that would work. We put together a business plan and started to find financial backing.
Ryan: Our actual first step was coming up with the name. We incorporated the business and the name. We looked at several different places before we found this one, and it seemed to be the best one to fit our needs.
AC: What are you doing to advertise your business?
Mikael: We do quite a bit of print advertising, flyers and such. We have word of mouth from people who have just dropped in and have liked the work our stylists do. In this type of business, word of mouth can make you or break you.
Ryan: We also have a Facebook page for the business and we use that to advertise special events such as Art Gallery Events. We have friends who are artists and we feature their work on our walls. The paintings are available for sale and change on a regular basis. We have also had private events. We had one recently for a friend who was injured in a bike accident. It was a charity event and we had about 200 people show up for that. We can book things like that for charity events.
AC: I understand that you have applied for a liquor license. What will people be able to drink?
Ryan: We are only going to offer wine and beer, but the beer will be the kinds that aren’t readily available elsewhere. We’re going to have different microbrews for people to try while waiting for their haircuts. We have a pool table, a wide screen TV, or people can just sit at the bar and visit. We want this to be a place for people to come and hangout and have fun, too, not just a place to get their hair done.
AC: What are your hours?
Mikael: We are open on Monday through Thursday from 10:00AM to 8:00PM and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00AM until Midnight. We take both walk-ins and appointments.
AC: How many Stylists do you have working here?
Ryan: We have three right now. Nikki, Antoinette, and Rachel. Nikki has 6 years of experience working for several local and international chains and she does cuts, coloring, and perms. Antoinette has 7 years of experience and Rachel has one year.
The cuts can be walk-in, but for a color or a perm, you need to make an appointment.
AC: Your prices are comparable to those of someplace like Mastercuts. Why should someone choose your place over theirs?
Ryan: We offer an environment that is more socially oriented. We want to make the wait a fun experience, not just one where you sit and read a magazine. You can shoot a game of pool, have a drink, check out the art hanging on the wall, or pick out a tune from our jukebox. Bring your friends and spend a few hours with us having fun. That’s what we want to offer to people.
AC: You are located at 1407 S. Broadway. What is appealing about this spot?
Mikael: This is an up and coming neighborhood in the antique district. There is a good mix of old and new businesses all together here. The people who live in the neighborhood tend to be a younger group and we hope to appeal to them as well.
Ryan: We have had all kinds of people come in, though, not just young people. We have given hair cuts to older citizens as well. It’s been a really good mix of people.
AC: Do you give any kind of discounts?
Ryan: We do give senior discounts as well as discounts for students and those in the military. We also offer discounts to Police Officers and Firefighters, and other first responders. My dad is a Police Officer and my mom is a nurse. I grew up around those kinds of people and that kind of atmosphere and respect the kind of work they do and want to give something back, even if it is just a discount on a haircut.
AC: What are the prices of the services you provide?
Mikael: Regular haircuts are $20.00. We also offer straight razor cuts and those start at $25.00.
Ryan: Color starts at $40.00 and go up from there and perms will be about the same. And again, cuts can be on a walk-in basis, but colors, or perms need an appointment.
Cuts & Brews is located at 1407 S Broadway in Denver, Colorado. The phone number is 303-744-7540. The building is on the west side of Broadway and is painted black with a large, red handlebar mustache on the outside. Inside is a large bar, a pool table, a large screen TV with a small area with a couch and chairs for sitting if you want to sit and read a magazine. At the very back, separated by a small wall, is where the actual haircuts are done. The place is clean, neat, and looks like a fun place to wait. Both Ryan and Mikael were very gracious and I want to thank them for allowing me to interview them. I hope they get plenty of new customers.
