Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones and the day all hell broke loose in Texas
I was born and raised in Texas and have been a fan of the Dallas Cowboys for over 40 years. Believe me when I say this, “Jerry Jones drives us all crazy.” Things are big in Texas and let me tell you, Jerry has the biggest ego of any Texan I know and maybe that every lived.
Here’s how it all started. I remember this so well. The day all hell broke loose in Texas. When Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and fired Tom Landry. I really mean this, everyone was just so pissed off about the whole thing. For a long, long time people were mad about the way Jerry treated Tom Landry. Because here’s the thing that Jerry never understood.
Fans loved Tom Landry, in fact they not only loved the guy, they had tremendous respect for him. Tom Landry made the Dallas Cowboys America’s Team and the Cowboys won numerous Super Bowls.
For God’s sakes, anyone with a brain should have known how to handle this situation. Tom Landry was a living legend as coach of the Dallas Cowboys. If Jerry wanted a new coach, then fine, meet with Tom Landry behind close doors, offer him a big bonus and both agree to say he is retiring. Be upfront with Tom and do the best you can to part on good terms. Including having a major event to honor Tom Landry’s long service to the Cowboys.
But no, Jerry did not handle this situation with any class whatsoever. So right from the start he made enemies of many of the Cowboy fans. This was all on the news for months. I will never forget a huge banner shown on the news. Someone had draped this from a bridge over pass in Dallas and it read, “Jerry Jones is a Goober.” Of course, all around much worse things were being said.
Unfortunately, this dislike of Jerry carried over to Jimmy Johnson. Which really was not Jimmy’s fault, he was just hired to come to Dallas and do his job. Then over time as Jimmy Johnson started to win games, fans came around. Especially since the Cowboys won several Super Bowls. By this time we really liked Jimmy. We tolerated Jerry because we had to.
To top it all off, Jerry and Jimmy get into it one night. It’s been said this happened at a hotel bar. Obviously, this all got out of hand and before we know it. Jimmy Johnson is leaving the Dallas Cowboys. The coach that brought America’s Team back is now leaving because Jerry just couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
Fans never really warmed to Jerry Jones and still have not to this day. Yes, of course we were happy when the Cowboys won Super Bowls. Rodney Dangerfield always said, “I get no respect.” Well really, it’s Jerry Jones that gets no respect, but he brought it on himself. If Jerry Jones would just get a good manager and keep his mouth shut. This could give the Cowboys a change to win and possibly be America’s Team again.
At one time, I was a huge Cowboy fan. I watched every game and knew all the players name. I even went to Texas Stadium to watch various games. But after Jerry Jones came along and Jimmy left, I am more of sidelines fan. I might turn the game on and watch a little, but if I don’t watch, it’s no big deal. I want the Cowboys to be a winning team again, but Jerry Jones may have destroyed America’s team.
