Jennifer Grey and dance partner Derek Hough received the top score of 24 on the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ 2010 premiere Monday night on ABC. It’s probably what most viewers expected, as well as the producers since Jennifer and Derek were next to the last couple to perform, as in saving the best for last-or nearly last.
Jennifer, who had gotten teary-eyed during rehearsal about the late Patrick Swayze, her co-star in the 1987 movie “Dirty Dancing,” performed gracefully as she danced the Viennese Waltz with Derek. “Somebody up there is going to be proud,” said Judge Bruno Tonioli. Judges Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba also approved, although Len said he wanted to see what would happen next week.
There are times when I watch performances on DWTS and think they’re good-only to hear the judges pan them. Other times I think dance routines are bad, but the judges say the opposite. Well, on Monday night’s Dancing With the Stars, I was on the same page with the judges when it came to Margaret Cho’s Viennese Waltz. It started out good and went downhill fast.
“What the hell was that? I thought you were going to eat somebody!” Bruno exclaimed. Carrie Ann told Margaret she was talented and lovely, but the performance, complete with golden wings made of fabric, was overly dramatic. Len pronounced the spoofy routine as inappropriate, although the beginning was encouraging. The total score for Cho was 15, five points from each judge.
Bristol Palin proclaimed herself a “regular girl, and this is the scariest thing I’ve done in my life.” Actually, I think almost every other competitor was scared, too, and all in all, Bristol got good scores, dancing to “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” for a total of 18. Len said it was a “very acceptable performance” for week one and that she could stand to loosen up a bit.
Florence Henderson thoroughly enjoyed herself, and even though she is 76, she reminded me of a little girl who knows she’s cute and is playing it to the hilt. That’s not to say she wasn’t professional because her Cha Cha Cha was extremely polished and she is an entertainer. She scored 18 points.
My vote for cutest dancer goes to Kyle Massey, who Cha Cha Cha’d his way to a score of 23 from the judges, second only to Jennifer and Derek. I must be getting better with my judging techniques because I thought he was good, too. Judge Carrie Ann told Kyle he was her first crush of the season and Len said “Keep that energy up and you’re gonna go a long way.”
Speaking of energy, Brandy has tons of it and she is ready to leave the other contestants by the wayside. She was charismatic, although Carrie Ann cautioned her against being too strong-and her dancing partner is “bad boy” Maksim Chmerkovskiy! Len said she made a great first impression, and she has 23 points to prove it, which ties her with Kyle.
Audrina Patridge was the first dancer of the night, and earned a not too shabby 19 points. Football star Kurt Warner was impressive, I thought, although Judge Len was not impressed. Len went on to say the 6 foot, 7 inch NBA champion Rick Fox was elegant and smooth and could “be my twin I lost at birth.”
Michael Bolton was a little awkward, but Len said he had “musicality,” while Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino put himself in a situation by having only five days to practice. David Hasselhoff danced last on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ only to learn he reminded Carrie Ann “of the offpring of Donnie Osmond and Jerry Springer.” Len found the performance entertaining, but told Hasselhoff to work on technique, while Bruno declared the performance “madness” and said he was looking for more next week. Hasselhoff garnered 15 points, Michael Bolton, 15, and “The Situation” got 15.
I predict Margaret Cho will get the boot on the September 21st episode of ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ Check back to see if I’m right or wrong.
