Season 11 of “Dancing with the Stars” premiered on Monday, September 20, 2010 on ABC. Though many contestants on the show start slow on the first week, the frontrunners of this season stood out. Unlike past seasons of “Dancing,” no one in this has cast has a reputation for dancing, with the exception of Jennifer Grey. The evening provided a few surprises and an emotional moment.
The night started with Audrina Patridge of “The Hills” and Tony Dovolani dancing the cha cha cha. Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised by her performance. Despite a few stiff moments, Audrina actually had a pretty good performance for the first week. If she makes it to the next week, I see her potential to get into the top five. The couple received a 19 from the judges.
The dance everyone will be talking about, though, was the penultimate performance by Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough. They had to do a Viennese waltz to “These Arms of Mine,” a song from the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. Her emotions showed before and during the dance. Patrick Swayze, who died last September, and Grey became one of the most beloved couples in movie history. Swayze, too, was a big supporter of “Dancing with the Stars.” The crows and the judges were moved to tears. They received the highest score of the night, 24.
Derek and Jennifer are definitely frontrunners. Other potential contenders include Kyle and Lacey, Brandy and Maksim, and Rick and Cheryl, all of whom received more than 20 judge points. Brandy was surprising because she’s not known for dancing, and in her music videos, she always did simple moves.
On the other end of the spectrum, there was a three-way tie for last place. Margaret and Louis, Mike and Karina, and David and Kym all received 15 points. I think David Hasselhoff will make it to next week because of his star power. Margaret, though, could be the first to go home. She started out fine, but her face looked angry and the comedy didn’t fit the romance that the Viennese waltz should evoke.
The surprise of the night would have to be Bristol Palin’s performance, the non-star of the group and the person with no performance history. I expected another Kate Gosselin. She started out nervous, but she can actually move her hips a little. If she makes it to next week, she should improve.
The results show airs on Tuesday, September 21. As with other seasons of “Dancing with the Stars,” we may all be surprises at who goes home.
