The premiere episode of “Dancing with the Stars” featured clear frontrunners, as well as participants who really need to work on their dancing skills. Of course, someone has to be the first to go, joining the ranks of Trista Rehn Sutter, Kenny Mayne, Belinda Carlisle, Shannon Doherty and Monica Seles.
I have to admit I was surprised that David & Kym were eliminated in the first week. I thought David had the most star power of all of the others at the bottom. He has had a long career, and his fans comprise people in their 40s and 50s, as well as people in their 20s who’ve come to know him through “America’s Got Talent.” On the other hand, Mike “The Situation” & Karina, who only had five days to prepare, were given a second chance to improve.
The night started with a trio of professional dance couples displaying their skills to the music of Santana. It was a lively beginning to the new season. The hosts recapped the previous night’s scores with backstage commentary by the contestants. Other music performances of the night included Daughtry and India.Arie. I enjoyed India.Arie’s performance with Santana because I haven’t heard from her in a long time.
Michael & Chelsie and Margaret & Lou were the first of the lowest scoring couples saved from elimination. I think, given time, Margaret could actually do well in the competition if she doesn’t go for the laugh. The comedy of her first performance contributed to her low scores, but the skills are in her. She should show people that she can be serious and sultry.
Former contestant Adam Carolla, then, gave a humorous commentary on the origin of the dances. Although I thought the information was interesting, it think it was just an attempt to kill an hour.
Of course, did anyone really expect Jennifer Grey to be eliminated in the first week after her emotional performance? I think not. Not only does she have one of the best professional dancers on the show; she has a dance background and people love her because of her connection with “Dirty Dancing” and Patrick Swayze. I will be surprised if she doesn’t make it to the last week of the Season 11.
I don’t look forward to Brooke Burke’s commentary for the rest of the season. Sometimes, it was painful to watch her interview the dancers. I have to say, though, she makes a better host than Samantha Harris.
As the season progresses, I have the feeling Brandy and Michael Bolton will perform. Historically, singers in the cast always perform in the results show. Episode 2 airs next Monday, September 27 on ABC.
