Brandy and Maks earned the top score of 27 on ‘Dancing With the Stars’ this week, dancing the Quickstep to the theme song of ‘Friends.’ The judges were impressed with the performance, including Len Goodman. “It was full of energy. It was a little bit sassy here and there,” he said.
Bruno told Maks he’d found the right formula and Carrie Ann said Brandy had learned how to trust Maks. “Not only are you trusting yourself, you’re trusting your partner,” she said. Each judge gave the couple, who danced first during the TV theme week episode of DWTS, a 9.
By contrast, Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas received 18, the lowest score of the night. They danced the jive to “The Monkees” theme song, taking to the stage in monkey suits they quickly ripped off. Never fear, though, Bristol’s dress was still conservative
Len liked the monkey suits (was he serious?) and saw a higher degree of performance. Carrie Ann saw transformation and a good performance, even though Bristol forgot some of the moves. All three judges gave the couple a 6.
It was a nostalgic night for Florence Henderson, who danced the Tango to “The Brady Bunch” theme with partner Corky Ballas. Barry Williams, who played Greg, on “The Brady Bunch” and who had a huge crush on his TV mom way back when, showed up during practice to keep an eye on Corky. “He’s too young for you, he’s younger than Bobby,” he quipped, referring to the youngest son on “The Brady Bunch.”
Carrie Ann said Florence was a “sexy senior,” but Bruno disliked the “rag doll” mode she got into. Len, in a wistful tone, said he wished he were a sexy senior, prompting Florence to give him a kiss. Len told Florence she had gotten to week 5 on her merit, not because of some fluke. Total score was 21.
Kurt Warner and partner Anna bewitched the judges by dancing the Quickstep to the TV theme of “Bewitched.” Carrie Ann said the spirit of Gene Kelly had entered Kurt’s body. Len and Bruno liked the performance too, and gave Kurt and Anna a total of 24 points.
Audrina and Tony danced the Rumba to “The Hills” and got mixed reviews. Carrie Ann said Audrina had improved and was gorgeous from the hip down, but everything above that was “still and dead.” Bruno carried on in that vein, saying “Don’t be plastic, be fantastic.” They still earned a decent score of 23.
Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer danced to the “Charlie’s Angels” theme song, which was a pleasure to watch, especially since Kyle donned a wig in his role as Charlie. Carrie Ann liked the performance, but Bruno said that although Kyle brought out the “feel good factor,” he looked like Richard Pryor “gone mad.”
Len really sunk it, saying, “It started bad and gradually got worse and worse. I couldn’t stand it. I thought it was terrible.” Len gave the dance a 5, Carrie Ann gave it an 8 and Bruno gave it a 7 for a total of 20 points.
Rick Fox, in a police uniform, and Cheryl Burke impressed just about everyone with their “Hill Street Blues” Rumba. Carrie Ann wanted to report a crime: it was a crime that Rick looked so good and danced the Rumba so well. They scored a 24.
Last but not least, Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough danced the Fox Trot to the tune of “Love and Marriage,” and managed to get 25 points, although Carrie Ann said it wasn’t Jennifer’s best performance. Len thought the dance got too theatrical, with Jennifer whisking around with a feather duster, but Bruno said it was like watching “the perfect housewife.” Hmmm. He gave Jennifer a 9, with Carrie Ann and Len each giving her 8.
I say either Bristol or Kyle will say goodbye on Tuesday evening. They both started out pretty good this season, but this is week 5, so somethings got to give.
