Chris Daughtry and his band (Daughtry) appeared on NBC’s “Today Show” Friday and rocked Rockefeller Plaza as part of the show’s Toyota Concert Series. The American Idol alumnus also talked about the music from his latest album, “Leave This Town,” and about his impending fatherhood. Chris Daughtry and his wife are expecting twins, due in a matter of weeks.
American Idol‘s most successful rocker laughed when talking about the anticipation of twins into his life when he and his wife, Deanna, already have two children. “I don’t know if we’re ready,” he said, “but we don’t have a choice. We’re very excited. It’s a very exciting time now. We’re a little nervous, but it’s gonna be awesome.”
The twins, a boy and a girl, will be Chris and Deanna Daughtry’s first children together. The have been married since November 2000. His wife had a daughter, Hannah, during a previous relationship. She is 13. The couple also have an adopted son, Griffin, who is 12.
With all the drama over the replacement judges, a barfight involving another former contestant, and the Fantasia Barrino married boyfriend news that has dominated the American Idol press coverage of late, it comes as a nice surprise that there is actually good news attached to the American Idol brand (other than stories attached to Carrie Underwood).
Daughtry, who finished a shocking fourth in Season 5 (many thought he should have won, and his subsequent success seems to have given the sentiment weight), has sold nearly six million albums to date (in the United States), making him the third most successful of all American Idol alumni in terms of overall album sales. Only Carrie Underwood (11.8 million) and Kelly Clarkson (10.6 million) have amassed greater numbers. Daughtry fans are quick to point out that Daughtry only has two albums in circulation, while Carrie Underwood has three and Kelly Clarkson has four.
Daughtry’s latest, his sophomore effort “Leave This Town,” is a bit more subdued, a little more introspective than his first. Thus far, it has sold over 1.1 million copies and produced three Billboard Hot 100 songs. All three singles from the album have also placed in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart.
Along with “Feels Like Tonight” (from his first album, “Daughtry”) and “Leave This Town,” Daughtry performed “September” for the New York crowd. The 30-year-old frontman explained the personal aspect of “September” to the “Today Show”: “It’s something that so many people can relate to whether they come from a small town or not. I think it’s the overall feeling of growing up and moving on.”
The live “Today Show” performance of “September” follows.
