Did your computer run amazingly fast when you first got it, now seems to take forever to boot up after you restart it? It may be time to optimize your computer for faster boot up times. This process is pretty simple and will only take a few minutes. Optimizing like this however will save loads of time on boot up especially if you restart your computer lots.
One of the biggest factors that causes your computer to boot slow is loading programs. The number of programs that start up when you start your computer can vary from user to user. Having lots of programs that load when your computer is started can cause it to boot up much slower. Plus, depending on what the program does once it boots up will also slow your computer at boot up. Take for instance, you install a spyware scanner. Which is a good idea, but this spyware scanner wants to scan the computer for spyware on every restart. This one program can slow your boot time and cause you to wait minutes or maybe even an hour before you can even use the machine. That’s not good and will need to turned off to speed up boot time.
In the example above, we need to optimize the spyware scanner. We don’t want it to run on every startup. Some programs have an options menu that allow you to schedule scans and what sort of scan needs to be run. Removing the option to run at startup should eliminate the scan when your computer boots. This also applies to other programs that may try to do something once the computer restarts like get an update.
You can also start up the Microsoft utility MSConfig to enable or disable programs that run on startup. To access the MSConfig utility: Select the Start button or icon, then select “Run”. In the input box type “msconfig” without the quotes. This will bring up the MSConfig utility. Once there, select the “StartUp” tab. You’ll be presented with a list of programs. The programs that are checked are allowed to run at startup and the ones that don’t have a check won’t startup when the computer does. Just by removing the check you can disable programs from starting which in turn will speed up your boot time. Be careful however, some programs are needed and may not run correctly if disabled on startup.
You can also find more powerful startup editors online. SpyBot Search and Destroy has a great startup utility built into its spyware scanner. Similar programs are available and it’s usually up to user preference which one you use.
