I never really knew how much a person’s thyroid controls its body and its functions until one day in August, now four years ago. I was sitting by the computer when I felt a lump in my neck. I had my husband feel it and he definitely agreed I should have it checked by a doctor. So I made an appointment for the next week.
The doctor first put me on an antibiotic for two weeks to see if it would go away on its own. I was not comfortable with this diagnosis so I sought a second opinion. The second doctor ordered an ultrasound of my thyroid for the following week. He called me later personally with the news. There was a chance that it was cancerous and I would need a biopsy done of the lump.
Thankfully, the biopsy turned out that the lump was benign. But now I had to consider what to do about my thyroid levels. They had turned out to be elevated. I was referred to an endocrinologist who I felt very comfortable with. She said it was not something to be alarmed with yet but definitely needed to be monitored. She also said not to get pregnant until we had the levels more level.
Well, I got pregnant a year later. So, I had to have my levels checked every six weeks to make sure they were on track. There is a very high risk of miscarriage and other developmental problems for the baby if the mother’s thyroid levels are not normal. Everything went fine with the pregnancy and when my baby was five months old, she suggested doing radio-iodine treatment. I had what was called a toxic nodule. After doing the treatment, I could not be by my children at all, not eat off of regular silverware and so forth. At first I thought it was like a vacation! No laundry, no dishes, no kids! But by the end of the second day, I was ready to get back to normal.
After the treatment, I had to go back to my endocrinologist for six month checkups. It turned out that the radio-iodine treatment had not worked. My thyroid levels were still elevated so I decided to try something else.
I was introduced to an herbal nutritionalist. She put me on a product called TS-II by Nature’s Sunshine. Six weeks later, my thyroid levels were back to normal. I have been on this product now for over a year and so far, my thyroid levels are still normal!
