Wandering around the historic downtown area of Sanford, Florida, you can work up quite a hunger. There are a number of eateries between the waterfront on the south shore of Lake Monroe and the downtown area. We stumbled upon Two Blondes & a Shrimp. Located in a two story former newspaper/telegraph building Two Blondes and A Shrimp is at 112 East First Street, Sanford, Florida, 32771 (Phone 407-688-4745) right along the main drag. Coming in from the bright sunshine, it was rather dark inside with exposed brick walls, wood flooring and high ceilings. The interior was very narrow with a saloon style bar figuring prominently in the décor. Bottles of liquor ready to be poured or mixed into a tasty concoction line the bar area. An eclectic display of paintings by local artists adorns the walls. The paintings are not only to enhance the ambiance of the restaurant but are also for sale to art lovers. Patrons can sit inside in the air-conditioned seating area or outside at the patio. The courtyard/patio is covered and there are large fans or heaters (depending on the weather) strategically placed to ensure the comfort of the customers. A fountain is also situated in the courtyard/patio area. We chose to sit inside the restaurant and were seated at a table with a view of the outside dining area. A local stray, a multi-colored rooster (Herbie Hancock) that roams the downtown Sanford area perched outside on the windowsill and was looking in at our table while preening himself. He seemed to be checking out our meal choices.
Service was good. We were promptly seated. There were just a few tables filled due to the time of day we arrived (around 2:00 pm). The server was friendly. We ordered drinks (they have a full liquor bar but no beer on tap) and got them right away. The menu featured appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. There were three of us for lunch and we selected a shrimp burger, a grilled cheese sandwich, tomato and cucumber salad and chicken salad sandwich. After placing our orders though we had a bit of a wait. The food when it arrived was worth the time spent between ordering and actually getting the meal. The shrimp burger was similar to a crab cake, fried and served on a bun. The Chicken salad sandwich was delicious, interesting and filled with chicken, pecans, raisns, curry and dressing on bread. The grilled cheese was tasty but nothing special, but the tomato and cucumber salad was very good. Other menu items included an Orange Blossom Special sandwich with turkey, cream cheese, craisins and orange marmalade, tomato pie and Cobb salad. Entrees run from about $13.00 and up. Children’s menu starts at about $4.00. We didn’t attempt dessert, but they do offer several options. Dress is casual.
