There are many shades of democracy. Of course, the developed countries have not only well established conventions; the rules & practices are followed not only in letter, but also in the spirit! The general education level & egalitarian societal structure ensure basic accountability is taken care of. Yes, they are now under pressure as the old ways of stable lives are under attack with technology & knowledge not the preserve of anyone, any longer. They transcend borders, with multinational companies going where the advantages for operations are & willing to relocate if need be lock, stock & barrel!
The world has opened up, no-holds-barred! People are aware of the latest of everything, be it in science, music, cinema or sport. The interests have converged. There is not much difference between the young anywhere, from US to China to India! But the vital difference is still the system of governance. China is under one party rule; taking advantage of a top-down, no nonsense rule of law, without any questions asked; leaders are not directly accountable to the people like in liberal democracies. India, Indonesia etc., enjoy festivals of democracies during election times & generally, the peoples’ voices do not matter much thereafter. They are in the radar again at future elections!
The dramas that go in between elections keep the people entertained & even riveted, but do not benefit them mostly! Much time is wasted with wild allegations that would never be proved. Also, whoever in opposition, tries to stay in the limelight by tripping the government, delaying even crucial legislations, mostly with lack of decorum! The sad fact is the leaders require thick-skin to survive; that effectively rules out those quite achievers, who need time, basic decency & cooperation to show their mettle that would eventually benefit the country!
The best are not part of the government, but pursuing own private goals, though most would gladly serve the country, but the stymied democratic process & even anarchy in parliaments, put them off! In the end, the people are short-changed forever, having to vote-in & out those, who are good at theatrics but lack substance to carry out the real work needed to solve the myriad problems in poor countries. The leaders play to the gallery; and showing real leadership to tackle the issues might not win elections in countries where the people are easily manipulated! Indians have been told of the billions stashed away illegally in overseas banks, but why no party is taking the initiatives in booking the culprits? When the truth is revealed, it could well be; you too, Brutus!
The democratic process has to evolve, but having seen the iron-fists in other systems, democracy is not in real danger anywhere! Even in Pakistan, the military is baulking at their periodical escapades at taking over; the problems are just too much, a sure hara-kiri to take on the reins now, if there was one! People are left with little choice, as all prove equally bad generally! After the periodical music & dance at election times, it is stark reality & back to square one!
Democracies give a feeling of empowering the people, but they are frustrated at being short-changed forever! They know things could be much better but as the majority in poor countries is easily swayed by emotions over issues raked-up at election time, the educated do not have much chance in electing leaders with substance. So the merry-go-around goes on and on! Of course, in time of real fires, the parties do unite but, unfortunately, for the rest of the time they play with fire & the lives of the poorest of the poor! Can there be deliverance soon for some of the biggest democracies; only time will bear testimony. One basic fact cannot be denied; the democratic system & process fail to do justice by the people with leaders in endless politicking than solving basic problems of life & death! But there seems to be no better, egalitarian, liberal alternatives in the offing; we still have a long way to go before we can sleep with a good conscience, the solutions seem to be beyond our grasp!
