I am a fan of Denny’s, especially their $2 $4 $6 $8 menu. On the occasions that I want to mix eating out with a diner feel, Denny’s value menu makes doing so affordable. They recently added an item to their value menu that I was excited about – well, as excited as someone could be about a sandwich whose name alone makes you think “heart attack waiting to happen.” Did the fried cheese melt live up to my expectations?
The fried cheese melt is basically the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. It is four fried mozzarella sticks with melted American cheese on grilled sourdough bread, served with marinara sauce and wavy fries. It was very delicious. It tasted just like all the best parts of a grilled cheese sandwich mixed with the best parts of Denny’s mozzarella sticks. The melted cheese is very stretchy and a little bit of fun, and sourdough bread goes surprisingly well with marinara sauce. It was buttery, crisp, and just a little bit tangy. They fries were okay, definitely not the reason for ordering the sandwich, but it does make it feel like a diner-style meal and not just an item from the $4 section of the $2 $4 $6 $8 menu. The sandwich itself made me feel very full, so the fries not being spectacular certainly isn’t a deal breaker. The beverage I had with the meal was hot chocolate, and that wasn’t bad. Soda, however, is the perfect compliment to the meal.
Of course, it isn’t the most nutritional item on the menu. This was obvious from the name “fried cheese melt”. It contains 1,260 calories and 63 grams of fat, so it’s definitely not something one should eat everyday, and if you do it really is a heart attack waiting to happen. However, for a once in awhile guilty pleasure, it is well worth the $4. You can’t even get mozzarella sticks for $4 at Denny’s. The fried cheese melt is a fun and tasty addition to the Denny’s value menu.
