The Desperate Housewives cast has been mostly intact over the years. But although the cast has had the same four Desperate Housewives lead the way for seven seasons, there has been room for change. After Nicolette Sheridan’s role was reduced, and then written out, Dana Delaney took over to round out the gang. But after early promise, her character was misused before Delaney went off to another ABC show. Yet, for Season 7, the Desperate Housewives cast is welcoming another potentially ideal new friend/rival — along with a few other new and old people.
The biggest addition to the show made her debut last night, as Vanessa Williams returned to ABC prime time. After stealing scenes as Ugly Betty’s scheming Wilhelmina for several years, Williams is now on Wisteria Lane as another sharp-tongued, manipulative schemer. This time, she is an old rival of Lynette’s who is moving into the group.
Although Williams is the big new Desperate Housewives cast member, she isn’t the only one. She is just making her debut on the show, but Mark Moses is a more familiar face. After challenging Don Draper for a few years as Duck Phillips on Mad Men, Moses is now creeping Wisteria Lane again as Paul Young, one of the show’s original villains.
Way back when, the show started as a murder mystery around narrator Mary Alice, and her suspicious husband Paul. But as last year’s season finale teased, Paul Young is moving back in, making Moses a regular Desperate Housewives cast member for the first time since Season 2. What’s more, Paul has returned with a second wife, and with a new mystery hanging over his head.
With Williams and Moses now among the cast, fans are left wondering how this latest shakeup will go. The show has had a mixed history with new regulars, succeeding for a while with Delany and Kyle MacLachlan, but fairing worse with Alfre Woodard in Season 2 and Drea de Matteo last season.
Given Williams’ track record of success, and Moses’ history with the show, things are expected to work out for the best this time. After a mixed Season 6, the series needs another shot in the arm to get some goodwill back, so they’re using old and fresh faces to do it.
In addition to Williams and Moses, the Desperate Housewives cast also made room for guest stars. Lainie Kazan is now the landlord and boss for Susan, as she tries to start over. Meanwhile, Brian Austin Green set himself up as the next potential man in Bree’s life.
The new and old Desperate Housewives cast members will work on getting tongues wagging again every Sunday night at 9 p.m. on ABC.
