Increasingly, most are dissatisfied going by their voluble criticisms and voting patterns. There are many issues that are crying for attention; unemployment, healthcare, infrastructure, trade imbalance, climate change etc. And also, those that threaten to blow-up the world but seem to last for generations without an end in sight. The endless Middle East peace initiatives, hitting roadblocks every time due to the intransigence of few, who seem to have the ultimate say that decides the fate of majority innocents, who look forward to peace to carry on a fulfilling life. People born in such regions, yearn for peace but are played out all the time. The issues are kept in the headlines for the benefit of the self-serving.
America is wounded, definitely, but is still the land of opportunity that others look up to. After being the undisputed leader of the world, it is painful, even for others, to imagine the once mighty country hurting. The frontiers of science were explored by none else better than them, with the moon landing capturing the minds of all in every nook and corner. This feat was so unbelievable that some still doubt whether that was for real! Now, America seems to have lost its moorings, drifting aimlessly. If such is the fate of a super power, what awaits ordinary mortals who find comfort hanging on to its coattails for comfort and security! Even the new kid on the block, China, rides on America’s power packed performance. In fact, both are in a tight bear hug, as they need each other despite the rhetoric!
But there are simmering issues that threaten to derail world economy and peace. Are we really working towards peace or at cross purposes? The arms race is backed by big business, with even countries trying to outdo each other. What hope for the peace process in such a scenario, as greed & self-interests rule? The whole exercise is reduced to a sham, with the innocents hood-winked forever and paying the ultimate price. Do innocent lives have no value with sore issues kept alive forever? Cannot the leading powers come to an agreement to commit to peace, whatever it takes and isolate the trouble makers? If globalization is the current buzz word everywhere, surely world peace is more of a priority to get the utmost attention.
The economic issues also seem intractable, especially, when it is mixed with potent politics! Then emotions take over; finding scapegoats rather than tackling the issues as one. The world equation has changed forever. When the benefits of globalization are felt across the globe, one cannot shut the door, if the fall-outs are not beneficial in every way. The way forward should be to fine tune economies and ride on the positives. China is one country that has benefited big time. Having tasted the success, it knows, it is a runaway winner as the world factory for cheaper products, but ominously gravitating towards higher value-added ones! For others, this turn of events is a game-changer, but need not be an all-out disaster. America & Europe face increasing, intractable unemployment. They can turn their attention to self-sufficiency in sectors like clean energy, though expensive to start with can reduce trade deficits and generate employment. And at the same time, benefit also from cheaper goods and outsourcing some services.
Each country has to face the challenges and prove its mettle like individuals. Failure to adapt will leave us behind those with a burning passion to succeed. If the basics are not well analyzed but solutions are based on emotions, the end result would be landing in bigger quagmires. It is no longer business as usual, no more good old days; but then again, we cannot go back to do with the basics. Even the good old are now addicted to the latest of everything and cannot do without them, with itchy fingers waiting to get to various gadget buttons! The inexorable ride is taking us to virgin territory; so longing for a life of denial is unrealistic. We should make our life sustainable to suit our greed and not cut off the nose to spite the face! The genie is truly out of the bottle; let us enjoy the ride and make it not only last, but also safe! But most important, play by the rules!!
