Between the North Beach and Alamo Square there is a new museum to explore! This one isn’t your usual tourist themed cheesy museum either. This museum celebrates an entire societal movement…The Beat Generation.
Started in the 1950s, The Beat Generation was the name given to underground anti-conformists at the time. Despite the negative connotations of the typical Beatnik back then, today it has become a word used to describe those who are free thinkers who don’t just think outside the box — they step outside of it all together. These are the people, who by pushing society’s boundries, give birth to new ways of living, thinking and relating to one another.
The Beat Museum is a celebration in the birth of this underground culture and everything that has come to be as a result of it. The Beatnik movement has influenced everything from movies to comic books. There is also an awesome gift shop which has some great gifts as well. It is located at 540 Broadway St.and Columbus Ave. and they are open every day 10 to 7. So throw on your beret and shades and head down there.
