Does Proactiv work? Well, I wanted to give it a shot based upon the many positive commercials I had seen on TV, and the ready access I had to purchasing Proactiv off of eBay and avoid a monthly subscription. I ended up buying Proactiv off eBay, getting the cleanser and the toner for about $15, which I thought was fair.
My acne was very mild, but for all the blackheads I have been battling since Jr High. I don’t have a huge amount of visible acne, but I wanted a product that could wash away all the blackheads that are literally all over my face, and I thought Proactiv would have me covered based on its positive reviews.
I used Proactiv once a day at night, first using the cleanser as directed and followed by using the toner. I noticed a strong burning sensation at first, but attributed it to the toner, and figured it must be working. Blackheads, be gone!
I woke up the next morning to insane redness all over my face. My face was dry and chappy, and felt and looked windburned. I once again attributed this to the toner and decided to back off the toner and just use the cleanser that night.
OK- ouch! The cleanser burned like a mother all over my face, and it hurt so bad I couldn’t even wash my face completely. I quickly rinsed off with cold water and called it a day.
I called my sister, who had also ordered Proactiv the same time I did, and she said it made her face hurt so bad she couldn’t even put lotion on, after just one use. She had already thrown the product away after just one use. I decided to follow her route.
Does Proactiv work? Hell if I know. I don’t even want to know. It burned my face so badly the first time I used it that I could barely put Aloe Vera on my face, and the redness and dryness and chapping took about a week to heal. I’d rather have my blackheads than have my face feel like it’s on fire.
Would I recommend Proactiv? No, simply because it just plain hurts to use. I don’t know if my sister and I’s experiences are typical or not, but I certainly would not push a product on someone that seems to cause more damage than good. Perhaps we needed to give Proactiv more time, but it hurt too badly to even attempt it. I’m sure it really does have positive results on blackheads and acne, but I really don’t want to try it again to find out.
I guess pain really is beauty.
