Dog parks are a lot of fun and provide great exercise for your dog. Make sure to follow these rules when visiting the dog park.
Dog parks are a lot of fun and a great way to get outside and mingle with new people and animals. There are some basic rules you should know before you go to a dog park.
Pick Up After Your Pet
Bring baggies to clean up after your dog. I bring super market bags and they work great.
Dogs need all of their shots before they go to the dog park. Dog parks are a breeding ground for germs, so make sure your dog has all of their shots before you go. Your veterinarian will let you know when you dog is ready to go to the park. If you are anxious to get your dog socialized, bring them to a puppy socialization class. Classes are offered by some animal shelters, and are a ton of fun.
Never bring a dog in the dog park with a leash. Dogs are pack animals. When a dog has a leash on, it gives a body language off that can start fights. If your dog needs to be on a leash, they should not be in a dog park.
There is usually communal water in the dog parks. Most of the water is brought by dog owners, and shared by all. I keep my water in the car, and let my dog drink it before and after we go to the dog park.
Well Behaved Dogs Only
Your dog must listen to you, cannot be violent, and must play well with other dogs and people.
Do Not Let Your Dog Gang Up on the New Dog
When new dogs come in, some dogs gather up by the entrance and gang up on the new dog. DO NOT let your dog do this. If your dog is the new dog, try to get your dog away from the pack. After a minute or two they will no longer be the new dog, and the other dogs should leave them alone.
