Dogpatch Cafe is a not-yet-open coffee shop at 20th and 3rd Street. The coffee shop does not have its grand opening until November, 2010, but they are already open to work out the kinks. They are offering coffee, breakfast, lunch and free wifi. I only had a cup of coffee, but in addition to the regular fare, the Dogpatch Cafe is offering vegetarian sandwiches for lunch.
Dogpatch Cafe is in an area of the Dogpatch that is badly need of commercial activity. On the same block along 20th Street is a Chinese restaurant, a club, a Mexican and Salvadoran restaurant and a grocery store, and even less along 3rd Street. Further down 20th Street are RVs that are park there as homes and many empty and dangerous buildings and warehouses that are fenced off and have not been used for a long time.
This end of the Dogpatch needs investment and traffic, and it is very good to see that the new cafe at a pivotal corner. Hopefully, the community will come out and support them, and it can be a Dogpatch Cafe will be a pillar for the rest of the block. On the day that I went, I saw a few 20 somethings lounging around using the wifi. Sometimes it just takes a spark to start a fire.
Dogpatch Cafe is located at 2295 3rd Street, and open from 7 am to 6 pm. It takes over from the old Sundance Cafe, right at the T-line stop. It looks like they will have some events at night, and they can be followed on Facebook at:
