Dreamfields pasta. An almost unbelievable prospect for low carbers and diabetics alike. Could it be true that a pasta could only have 5 digestible carbs per serving… and what does that mean anyway?
I will tell you about my own experience with dream fields pasta and how it works. This article is not so much a review as it is an explanation and one persons experiment. I will give you as much information as I can about this product so that you too can be aware and base your own opinions, maybe even go try it for yourself.
The “Dream” of Dreamfields pasta was first introduced to the public in January, 2004. It seems the company is targeting dieters more then diabetics as they are still in the testing phase for effects on diabetics. The inventor of the process of making this pasta a low carb option is Dr. Jon Anfinsen.
This new food-technology is based on the fact that they make most of the carbohydrates in the pasta protected by digestion in the body. Molecular interactions help block an enzyme from attacking the carbohydrate starch granule in the pasta itself. They have created a matrix so to speak, that has a tendency to make the enzyme attract to the matrix and not the carbohydrate. The carbs that they say are non-digestible are not counted as fiber so much as they act like fiber in the body. If cooked over the exact time directions on the box, you will essentially break that matrix down and the pasta will then be no longer a low carb pasta. So when you are trying it for yourself, be sure to not over cook.
Dreamfields now has a potato and even a rice product in the works. Is this a low carb dieter’s wish come true? Perhaps… but the real questions are, is there any side effects and does the stuff really work as a low carb substitute to our favorite foods?
As for my own personal experience and test with the pasta, I have found that it actually is a perfect low carb substitution for family pasta night. I no longer have to feel left out and eating my salad while the family enjoys a hot helping of delicious lasagna or spaghetti. Or how about those days when the kids want mac and cheese? Yep, you guessed it… Dreamfields also offers the elbow pasta that we have all grown up knowing in our macaroni and cheese dishes. I feel that this product has helped me stay on my plan as well as helping me not feel out of place at meal time.
I personally have had no side effects from using the pasta. I did not have a weight gain or retention. It, I would say… had no effects on me at all that normal pasta would have. I know that from friends that have tried it said they either did or didn’t have blood sugar spikes.
In conclusion, the pasta is a technological godsend for us low carbers looking for another way to enjoy our favorite foods again. Just remember like all food, you should always eat in moderation. To much of anything is not a good idea. This pasta should be used as a side dish or mixed with veggies, meat or you choice of other foods.
If eating these types of foods gives you cravings or makes you lose track of your diet, then its recommended that you either do not try it or eat it only seldom. Keep focus of your goals and don’t be swayed by the products that come out onto our store shelves.
