Most anywhere you work today has a dress code that states what you can and cannot wear at work. Some of them are very casual while others are more formal but there are still certain guidelines that employees must adhere to. This has many people asking the questions, how important are these dress codes at work and are they really necessary?
To answer these questions you must first look at why dress codes are implemented in the first place. Many people are very fashion orientated and they tend to buy their clothing based on the latest trends. In some cases, this would be fine but in others, the latest trend is not always appropriate for the workplace.
Many of the latest trends would be very distracting and this can cause a lot of problems in the office. It reduces production and can cause problems between co-workers when one person thinks someone else is dressing too skimpy or shabby. There are even some people who don’t think about what they’re wearing when they leave the house. Many of them have a tendency of wearing clothing with holes in them that exposes parts of their body that shouldn’t be seen by their co-workers.
Others enjoy wearing revealing outfits that show too much skin and this is inappropriate for a work environment, even though they may not think it’s a problem. What the workers wear and how they present themselves is a reflection on the company. Therefore, it can have an effect on the success of the company and this is why dress codes have been implemented into the work environment.
Of course, dress codes must be reasonable and based on the type of work the employee performs. For example, the dress code for a factory worker would not be as strict as those put into effect for an office worker. Still, there are certain guidelines that apply to almost all types of work. These include not wearing anything that is too revealing such as miniskirts, halter tops, tank tops and muscle shirts. Clothing with foul or abusive language, gang related messages and clothing that is ragged out are all normally against dress code.
The dress code for any company should be gone over with the employees in advance to make sure they understand the guidelines. The employee should acknowledge that they can and will adhere to these codes. Business owners can never expect someone to know what is appropriate and what’s not because everyone has their own personal opinion on the subject.
This is the main reason why dress codes at work are necessary and very important. They are needed to maintain professionalism and to keep things running smoothly. Otherwise, the workplace would become chaotic and both production and professionalism would suffer.
