Far too often young men and women, and young women in particular, travel outside inadequately protected from the elements in an attempt to maintain some unwritten code of fashion that seems to dictate that a person must dress the same way 365 days a year with only a few potential variations. There is nothing fashionable about being cold in the winter though and dressing too casually on a cold winter’s day can even be deadly. It is important to dress for warmth when temperatures are freezing, but it is possible to do this and stay moderately fashionable.
A layered look is almost always in, particularly in the fall. If you are going to a function where you will be warm in doors but time spent in transit will be cold, wear layers. Take a collapsible tote bag along and store it in your pocket or handbag until you arrive and then shed your layers and put them in the tote for the evening. If you are at a nice restaurant or a function with a coat closet or checking service, store your tote instead of a jacket.
A layer does not have to be the quintessential long sleeve shirt over a short sleeve shirt though. Wear a short sleeve shirt over a long sleeve shirt of contrasting color for a unique look or look into a trendy cape style covering or borrow one of grandma’s vintage shawls!
Long Johns or Union Suits
The quintessential long red union suit with a back flap and three buttons in the front seems to be the depiction most people retain of long johns, but there are many varieties of warm and comfy undergarments on the market today. Companies like Cuddl’ Duds offer prints in a variety of thicknesses and weaves types for pairing under various types of clothing.
A pair of long johns made out of a tightly woven yet thin material is perfect for pairing under business clothing while thicker cotton long johns can be worn to bed at night as well as under looser fit clothing on casual days. Many times fun prints or geometric patterns are offered on thicker suits, but the thinner suits greatly resemble casual camisoles and undershirts that would be worn anytime.
There is no excuse for freezing to death this winter when you can stay warm while staying fashionable with either secret undergarments or strategic layers!
