Who said that fundamental religious groups never did anything for the masses? According to recent reports from the New York Post, re-iterated by the Brooklyn Heights Blog (1), the funding problem could be all but over for the DUMBO waterfront.
As anyone paying attention knows, virtually everyone involved has been tooth-and-nail to keep high rise condos from destroying the Brooklyn waterfront (and the requisite view of Manhattan landmarks like the Empire State Building.) Jehovah’s Witnesses have stepped onto the scene and have quietly suggested that the buildings they own could “be purchase by the City, converted to luxury condos, and the tax revenue they generate used to help fund Brooklyn Bridge Park maintenance.”
That’s fine and people all seem pretty happy with that idea. However luxury developers could have their hands in the pot a little deeper than even the City is admitting to. This announcement was leaked several days ago. Now? Kibosh. There has been no word; there has been no statement, nothing.
Will developers get their way so that only their luxury tenants have the views everyone in DUMBO and on the BQE has come to know and love?
