Dunkin Donuts “DD Smart” menu includes oven-toasted sandwiches, Dunkin Donuts coffee, espresso and teas that are not supposed to be healthier. But be careful when ordering from the DD Smart menu, because not every item is truly diet friendly.
Some of the options on the DD Smart menu include the egg white veggie flatbread, egg white turkey sausage flatbread, egg and cheese on an English muffin, ham, egg and cheese on an English muffin and egg and cheese wake-up wrap. Even though it’s simple, the wake-up wrap is really yummy.
Some of the Dunkin Donuts coffee items on the DD Smart menu include latte lite, ice latte lite, coffee with skim milk, iced coffee with skim milk and hot tea.
While I enjoyed several items on the DD Smart menu, sometimes you want to have a donut with your Dunkin Donuts coffee. I looked at what are the better options when you want to splurge at Dunkin Donuts.
No. 1: If you are in the mood for a Dunkin Donuts oven-toasted sandwich:
Choose This: The egg white turkey sausage flatbread with 290 calories and 8 grams of fat and 21 grams of protein. It’s extremely tasty and actually has fewer calories than the egg white veggie flatbread which has 330 calories, 12 grams of fat and 20 grams of protein.
Not That: The Dunkin Donuts bacon, egg and cheese biscuit contains 490 calories and 30 grams of fat including 14 grams of saturated fat. It contains 4 grams of sugar and 18 grams of protein. The biscuit contains 1300 mg of sodium which is 54 percent of the recommended daily allowance.
No 2: If you are in the mood for a donut:
Choose This: The Dunkin Donuts Jelly Filled Donut contains 290 calories, 14 grams of total fat and 7 grams of saturated fat. It also contains 6 grams of sugar and 340 mg of sodium.
Not That: The Dunkin Donuts chocolate glazed cake donut contains 370 calories, 24 grams of total fat and 11 grams of saturated fat. It also contains 17 grams of sugar and 390 mg of sodium.
You will actually do better having the donut compared to a DD Smart reduced fat blueberry muffin with 430 calories, 9 grams of fat and 41 grams of sugar.
No. 3: If you are in the mood for Dunkin Donuts coffee:
Choose This: The Latte Lite small with 80 calories and zero fat and 10 grams of sugar. Or have a small iced coffee with 10 calories, no fat and no sugar.
Not That: Even though it’s on the DD Smart menu, don’t pick the Coffee Coolatta with Skim Milk, Small with 210 calories and zero fat and 49 grams of sugar.
For the most part, I was pleased with the better choices on the DD Smart Menu, but I was bothered by high sugar items that were given the DD Smart seal of approval. The DD Smart reduced fat blueberry muffin is a perfect example because the calories (430) is greater than a regular jelly donut (290). Also, the muffin contains 41 grams of sugar with is equivalent to more than six jelly donuts with 6 grams of sugar in each!
