A magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in a south island of New Zealand at 11:35 a.m. EST and spreads panic and destruction. The powerful earthquake in New Zealand knocked out power and crumbled buildings. The earthquake in New Zealand hit about 35 miles west of the city of Christchurch and panic and destruction soon followed.
The earthquake in New Zealand that caused panic and destruction has been reported by the Associated Press as causing extensive damage in the city of Christchurch including widespread power outages. Because this quake was only at a depth of 7.5 miles, many people could feel the effects. An aftershock of magnitude 5.7 hit approximately 20 minutes later.
New Zealand is no stranger to earthquakes. According to GNS Science there are approximately 14,000 quakes in New Zealand each year and 100-150 are strong enough to be felt. They also explain that two tectonic plates are constantly grinding together underneath New Zealand, helping to create earthquakes.
It is no wonder that the earthquake in New Zealand spreads panic and destruction knowing that only two other 7.0 or stronger earthquakes have struck this area during the past decade (GeoNet). This earthquake was so powerful and so shallow that the knowledge of how widespread or severe the damage was will come much later. Updates on this quake will be provided as information is collected and shared.
