The Eastbound and Down Season 2 premiere may not be cable’s big event tonight. Yet the Eastbound and Down Season 2 premiere is huge for some, as the show seeks to build on the cult of Kenny Powers. Although the first year only comprised six episodes, it was enough to build a cult audience and establish an outrageous anti-hero. Now, this egotistical, cocky, crude, sexist, racist former baseball star is heading into new territory to make his comeback. With the Season 2 premiere, Kenny Powers is going south of the border.
Warning: Spoilers follow
Kenny Powers returned to his Southern hometown in disgrace after his career as a big league pitcher flamed out. But just when he got his abilities back, and looked to make a comeback in Tampa Bay, it all came crashing down. As such, he has left his town, his girlfriend, and his country in shame – yet his latest comeback opportunity arrives in the Mexican baseball leagues.
The premiere comes at the tail end of HBO’s Sunday night schedule. For the next several weeks, HBO will have Sunday nights filled with drama and comedy, with Boardwalk Empire at 9, and a new comedy block from 10 to 11.
After Bored to Death starts its new season at 10, a much wilder and off-kilter HBO comedy show will return. To a select cult audience, Eastbound and Down is as much of an event as anything from Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men and Dexter.
The six episodes last year turned Danny McBride’s Kenny Powers into an iconic figure in some circles. Since then, his power has only grown, as Kenny actually endorsed K-Swiss shoes during the offseason. However, 30-second, PG-rated commercials are hardly the ideal showcase for a creature like Kenny.
With the Eastbound and Down Season 2 premiere, Kenny will return to his full-on, offensive, not-safe-for-commercials act. This time he gets to perform it in Mexico, making room for another wave of politically incorrect material – including Kenny in cornrows. In addition, Michael Pena, Ana de la Reguera and Deep Roy are among his new friends/victims.
It is probably too much to expect a show like this, and a character like this, to become more of a mainstream hit this year. Yet the Season 2 premiere is bound to reinforce that this is the furthest thing from mainstream – and Kenny Powers’ followers like it that way.
The Eastbound and Down Season 2 premiere – aka Chapter 7 – airs at 10:30 p.m. est on HBO, after the second episode of Boardwalk Empire and the return of Bored to Death.
