Refrigerators can quickly become cluttered and overstuffed with food items that may be good or they may not; it’s really hard to tell sometimes. This makes it really hard to keep the refrigerator clean and uncluttered. Nobody wants to throw anything out because they’re not sure what to throw out and what to keep. Here are some simple ways to keep your refrigerator clean and uncluttered.
Marking the date
How many times have you looked into your refrigerator and had no clue of which food items were actually good or has past its expiration date? I think we’ve all had this problem before; here is an easy solution to this problem, then you’ll know exactly what to toss and what to keep.
Make sure that you always have a permanent marker handy near the refrigerator. Before you put anything into the refrigerator, mark it with the date that it was purchased. This includes, prepared foods, sauces, spreads, condiments, and anything else that is perishable.
Take the permanent marker and mark the date on the food items that you had just purchased. Because you marked the date, this saves you from second-guessing if that food item is still good or not; now you can just toss it out with confidence if it’s past its expiration date and no longer good.
Make sure that you mark the date on any leftovers; if you have placed the leftovers in a sealed plastic bag, right the date right on the bag. If you place the leftovers in a plastic container, instead of marking the date right on the container, place a two inch strip of freezer tape on the container and mark the date. You can simply pull off the strip and use the container again for storing another food item later.
Before the grocery store
Make it a habit to quickly scan the food items in your refrigerator to see what is needed and what is still fresh before going to the grocery store. You can quickly toss out any food items that aren’t any good anymore by looking at the date, such as leftovers that are more than a day or two old.
The trick to making this work is to not get attached to the food. Go ahead and toss that squishy, brown pear or that container of leftover hamburger helper from the dinner the other night.
To keep the shelves in your refrigerator sparkling clean, after clearing away the expired food, spray some disinfectant on the shelves and give a quick wipe. So when you get home from the grocery store, you can place the new food items right into your clean refrigerator, of course, after you have marked the date on them.
It will be easy to keep your refrigerator clean and uncluttered by applying these simple steps, so try them today and you will never have an un-clean, cluttered refrigerator again.
