It is no secret that teenagers like creative key chains. This fun letter tile key chain project takes only a bit of time to create, but would make an easy craft for a teen or pre-teen to complete. (Use extreme caution during the portions involving hot glue.)
For this project, you will need (per keychain):
– Several Scrabble wooden game board tiles
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a color of your choice
– Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Pant Pen in Gloss Black
– Small scrap of coordinating fabric
– Fabric scissors
– Fabric marking pen
– Metal keychain ring (available at craft supply stores)
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth
Cover the space you will be completing this keychain project with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Use medium or fine grit sandpaper to smooth as many wooden Scrabble game board tiles as you wish to use in the finished project. Wipe down the tiles with a tack cloth or other similar style soft cloth to remove any grit or dust.
Prime both sides of the wooden game board tiles with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Once dry, paint both sides of the wooden tile using Krylon Indoor Outdoor paint in a color of your choice. Wait thirty minutes, apply a second coat of paint to the tiles, and dry for three to four hours. Next, add any lettering or design you wish to each tile using a Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black. Dry overnight.
Lay a large piece of scrap fabric flat on the workspace. With a ruler and a fabric marking pen, create a one inch wide strip onto the fabric. (The length will depend on how many game board tiles you are using. Assume one inch long for every game board tile plus one inch. Then, double the measurement.)
Carefully cut out the fabric strip using fabric scissors. Heat up the hot glue gun on a warm setting. Thread the fabric piece through the metal keychain ring and back onto itself. Apply hot glue to the inside of the fabric and press together. (This will keep the metal keychain ring in place as the fabric is sealed upon itself.) Apply dabs of hot glue to the back of each letter tile. Adhere the tiles onto the fabric strip. Cool completely before using the keychain.
