Labor Day is a great holiday in the United States, meant to honor the achievements of laborers. So naturally, we take this day off. It is a time to celebrate with family and friends, before heading back to school or work. For this holiday, just like any other holiday, food is important. Here are a few ideas to get your Labor Day menu planned.
Serve easy summer drinks if you can. Lemonade, iced tea, or raspberry iced tea. You can always add to these to make them alcoholic too if that’s the kind of party you are throwing. On the other hand, if you are having a lot of children at the get together, pink lemonade is always a good choice.
If you are having your Labor Day party outside, you want to keep your appetizers relatively simple. Actually, I am of the opinion you should keep the whole menu simple, because you don’t want to be slaving the whole day. So for appetizers I would recommend a nice fruit and cheese tray. Or an appetizer of grapes, which is my favorite. To make them sweeter, melt some cream cheese and brown sugar. The amount of ingredients depends on how large your party is. For a small group, use at least one block of cream cheese. If it’s only adults, you can add some Kahlua to your grapes to make them taste a little better.
Again, keep it simple. Grill some brats, hamburgers or chicken. My favorite is to make caribbean jerk chicken. This is easy. You can find the caribbean jerk marinade at stores such as Target. Marinade the chicken for at least 30 minutes. (I would recommend an hour.) Then just grill as usual.
My favorite side is a pasta salad. This salad is a poppy seed turkey salad. Get 1lb of turkey, a box of bow tie pasta, swiss cheese, celery, green onion and poppy seed dressing. Cook and drain the pasta, and add in the other ingredients. It’s a simple salad that is extremely tasty.
Here is a simple and delicious dessert: snicker salad. I’ve taken this to many places and I always get asked for the recipe. This again will vary on how many you are making it for. I always have at least six apples, three full size snickers bars, two containers of whip topping and a box of vanilla pudding mix. Mix these all together (wait as long as you can to add the apples so they don’t brown) and adding the pudding mix to taste. It’s fast, easy and delicious!
