A pillowcase is not an absolute necessity in life. You can still sleep on a pillow even if it doesn’t have a case. However, the pillowcase adds a little touch of comfort while protecting the pillow so that it lasts many years. Similar things are true about a laptop sleeve. You don’t absolutely have to have one, but if you care about the life of your laptop, you might want one. The laptop sleeve simply slides over the computer and protects it from dust.
You don’t have to be an expert at sewing to make an easy but useful laptop sleeve. You can use just about any type of fabric to make the sleeve but stretchy or whispy fabrics are not ideal. Denim, corduroy, felt, satin, fleece or even fake fur are all options to make the laptop protector. Fold the fabric in half, with right sides together, and cut the shape needed for the sleeve.
You won’t need to take measurements and put yourself through a bunch of extra steps if you just set your laptop on the cloth. Draw around it with a pencil or chalk, leaving an inch to spare around three sides but three inches to spare at one end. This will be the end that you use to slide the laptop in and out of the sleeve.
Pin the fabric together on three sides and leave the side with the three extra inches unpinned. Sew around the three pinned sides then remove the pins and turn the sleeve right-side-out. Fold the open edges over a half-inch, then an inch, and pin. Sew all the way around to create a hemmed edge for the laptop sleeve.
To use the sleeve simply slide the laptop in and out of it. When the computer is not in use the sleeve can keep dust off of it. The sleeve is especially useful if you have pets in the house. Pet hair and dander can wreak havoc on any electronics.
There are lots of things you can do to make one laptop sleeve look different from another. Before sewing the fabric into the shape of the sleeve you can sew on a monogram or other applique. Or, use paint markers to just write your initials on it. Or, use fabric glue to attach decorative buttons, fake jewels or other embellishments. Although the laptop sleeve isn’t ideal for trying to carry the computer around it’s perfect for protecting it while it’s not in use.
