Hair bows become dirty just like all other fabric items, and they require occasional cleaning. However, they cannot be washed in an automatic washing machine like other fabrics. Many are very delicate and would end up falling apart. Try these easy ways to clean hair bows, and make them look as good as they did when they were new.
Clean Hair Bows with Baby Wipes
Baby wipes are great for more than just diaper changes. They have many uses. The cleaning agents are mild, and rinsing is never required. Since they will not harm a baby’s tender skin, they will not damage delicate hair bows. Use ordinary baby wipes to gently clean hair bows by hand. Be sure to get in and around creases where dust, dirt, hairspray, and natural oils tend to build up. Allow them to dry naturally in a warm location, or use a hairdryer on a low setting. They will look as good as new.
Steam Clean Hair Bows
One of the best ways to clean fabric craft items such as hair ribbons and bows is with steam. If you do not have a handheld steamer, boil a pan of water on the stove. Using a pair of long-handled tongs, hold the hair bows one by one over the steaming water. Be careful not to hold them too close to the hot steam since damage can occur. Plastic embellishments can melt and become misshapen. Wipe each steamed ribbon with a clean, dry cloth. Dirt, hairspray, and dust will wipe right off.
Hand Clean Hair Bows with Shampoo and Water
Shampoo gently removes natural body oil and hairspray from hair, and it can also be used to clean dirty bows. Fill a basin with cool water and a little shampoo. Gently agitate each dirty ribbon, one at a time, and place them under clear running water to rinse away the shampoo. Lay them flat to dry in a warm location. They will be as bright and as clean as they were when they were new.
Use a Soft-Bristle Toothbrush Around Bobbles and Beads
Embellished areas of hair bows have crevices where dirt and dust collects. No matter which cleaning method is chosen, use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently clean any bobbles and beads. These areas will be shiny, and ribbons that once looked old and worn will look fantastic.
Refresh Clean Hair Bows with Liquid Starch and Water
Hair bows that have been washed can become limp and unattractive. Refresh them with a combination of liquid starch and water. Combine the starch and water according to product label instructions and recommendations. Once they are clean and freshly starched, they will look like new.
