Never let it be said that there are not any good news out there because that would be false. It can be said that even though there is good news out there, it may never be as prominent in the news cycle as murder, confrontations, or Sarah Palin.
“The economy grew slightly faster last summer than first thought, benefiting from stronger spending by U.S. shoppers and improved overseas sales of U.S. goods.” “The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that the economy expanded at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the July-September quarter.” “That was better than the 2 percent pace initially estimated last month.” “The pickup in growth comes after the economy slowed sharply in the spring, advancing at an anemic rate of just 1.7 percent.” “Even with the improvement, consumers would need to spend more to have a significant impact on the jobs market .” “Sales of U.S. exports to foreign customers grew at a 6.3 percent pace in the third quarter, another factor in the third-quarter bump-up.” “That compared with a 5 percent growth rate first estimated.” ” Business spending on equipment and software also turned out to be stronger.” “It grew at a 16.8 percent pace, compared with a 12 percent growth rate first estimated.” “And spending by state and local governments nudged up at a 0.8 percent rate, another factor in the upward revision.” “The government provides a total of three estimates of gross domestic product for any given quarter. GDP measures the value of all goods and services – from machinery to manicures – produced within the United States. Each new reading is based on more complete information.” (Aversa, Jeannine, 11/23/2010, Associated Press, Economic growth slightly faster than first thought, Retrieved www.yahoo.com ).
One could argue that this economy is not moving fast enough to suit voters but I would have to inquire if it is not better than it was before those things some believe didn’t work, like the stimulus or extending unemployment benefits. I’m not an economist but even I can see that with any increase in spending means an increase in economic growth. I can only wonder just how much faster this economy would have recovered if everyone was working together. Everyone like those banks who got those bailouts turning right around and loaning that money out to the real small business owners allowing them to buy that equipment, expand their facilities and hire more people. Just a thought.
