The egg recall list continues to expand, and egg brands associated with the 2010 salmonella outbreak are more numerous than previously expected. The mess all started with the Wright County Egg Farm in Iowa. Jack DeCoster, the entrepreneur behind the farms, is reported to be a repeat offender in the arena of various food safety related violations, and is prohibited from opening any more farms in Iowa.
The FDA recently went out to a couple locations from which contaminated eggs are believed to have come. The results were shocking, as the Associated Press reports indicate that “Food and Drug Administration investigators have found rodents, seeping manure and even maggots at the Iowa egg farms believed to be responsible for as many as 1,500 cases of salmonella poisoning.”
The report went on to say that there were “flies too numerous to count” and maggots “too numerous to count” noted at the location. Manure, seepage, and rodents infested what should be a fairly clean operation.
