Elin Nordegren and Sandra Bullock. Two women who have been in the news lately and who have acted with grace and dignity under very trying circumstances.
Elin: How hard must it have been to be this woman? Married to a superstar in the world of golf, mother to his two children, having untold riches and envied by many. Young, beautiful, she seemed to have it all until that fateful night last November when the entire world learned the truth, along with her, of Tiger’s many mistresses’s and lies.
She had been in Tiger’s life since 2002. They had started dating seriously then and were married in 2004. Elin had been a model before marrying Tiger and she gave up her career to be his wife and mother to his children. How much did she know before the night of the infamous accident? Did she learn of each mistress as the world did?
How humiliating and hurtful an experience that must have been to go through in the public eye, but she did it with style and grace, never giving any interviews until the marriage was completely over and her children were promised a good, or should it be said, excellent future. The world looks at her and see’s a woman with a backbone of steel; one who did not bend to the pressure’s of the daily barrage of those who wanted to “get the story”. Her only concern was keeping her children sheltered and safe from what was happening as much as she could.
Can you imagine having any kind of relationship with the man who humiliated you in front of the world? She does and to all appearances, it is a friendly one, for the sake of the children.
Sandra Bullock: Much the same can be said of Sandra. In a seemingly happy marriage to a man who somehow just didn’t seem to fit her. At least to those of us looking in.
We watched her happy speech at the Academy Award Show last year and he was by her side, seemingly the very epitome of the happy, proud husband. Jesse James; builder of custom motorcycles, dare devil, and father was about to take a huge tumble. It was about a week or two after the Oscars that the news broke of Jesse’s own sordid affairs with numerous women. Sandra simply disappeared. No interviews were done and for a while, no one knew where she was.
The paparazzi were on constant watch for any Sandra sightings as we watched and waited to see how this woman would react to her marriage breaking down and her husband being shown to be a jerk. More women came forward to claim to have been one of his many conquests and it just got ugly. Jesse fell far from our graces and even when he went on television with tears in his eyes, it didn’t help him very much.
When we all heard the news that Sandra had adopted a baby and moved to New Orleans, it was a surprise for most of us. She began to appear in public again. Slowly, but with her head held high, she re-emerged into view. The only thing she has said so far about the whole, ugly mess has been in veiled jokes made by her in speeches she has given and at her own expense.
Sandra will survive and we all will love her for it. Do we care what Jesse does anymore?
Two men brought down by their own selfishness and thoughts that they were above it all. Two women who are stronger now, than when it all started. We Americans love a story where the hurt get back up and grow stronger because of it. Sandra and Elin are just two recent examples. Hold your heads high Ladies. You have done well!
