Rick Sanchez, CNN on-air personality who self-destructed, is taking the limelight away from the newest addition to the network: Eliot Spitzer. Is the scandal over Sanchez’s Jon Stewart comments justified?
Rick Sanchez Self-destructs On-air over Jon Stewart
Move over Imus, there is a new need for the seat of contrition occupied by disgraced on-air personalities. Rick Sanchez, CNN powerhouse and on the receiving end of some needling by Jon Stewart, self-destructed on-air when being interviewed by Pete Dominick. Boston’s Culture Club blog recalls how Cuban-American Sanchez (in a nutshell) “ousted” the Jewish-owned media and its bias.
Christopher Hitchens Gives Sanchez the Thumbs-Up
The stereotype of the Jewish-owned media is an old one; it is also one of the comments an on-air personality is wise to only make in private. That said, high-profile author Christopher Hitchens, with his trademark devil-may-care attitude, is officially calling for the rehire of Rick Sanchez. CNN – as reported by Newser – should not be part and parcel of the groups that “swoon before pro-Israel group AIPAC,” according to Hitchens, but even he has to admit that Sanchez’s statements were laden with an odd resentment.
Was It a Lack of Sleep?
The usually boisterous Sanchez Twitter account (Rick Sanchez CNN) has been conspicuously silent in recent days. E! Online caught up with Mrs. Sanchez, who is waging her own Facebook campaign to end the vilifying of her husband. She suggests that her husband had been exhausted from working 14 hours a day for the last two months. Yet, while John Stewart received an apology from Rick Sanchez, CNN is not talking about rehiring him. Instead, they now put Eliot Spitzer on the air.
Eliot Spitzer on CNN
As previously reported, Spitzer is best-known for his recent connection to a New York prostitute while being governor. In June 2010, Media Spy reported that CNN hired Spitzer as a program host in the hopes of providing some life support to the network’s failing ratings. If the pairing of the liberal Spitzer with a conservative Kathleen Parker rings a bell for the viewer, it is probably over the (now dissolved) Fox News Channel pairing of Hannity & Colmes.
While it is unclear what the viewers think of the sudden departure of Sanchez, CNN’s quick rebound and hiring of Spitzer, one thing is clear: At least one E! Online commenter has already pointed out that Spitzer is Jewish, adding more fuel to the (stereotypical) fire.
