On September 9, 2010 — MTV announced that Eminem will open the 2010 Video Music Awards with a live performance. We all know that a VMA performance from Eminem this year promises to be a memorable one for his fans and critics alike. He has not graced the VMA stage since 2002. The big question is what will Eminem perform? According to MTV’s VMA Performance Poll — Eminem’s fans are hoping to see ‘Love the Way You Lie’, the controversial collaboration he did with Rihanna — one of the hottest songs from his latest album. A song whose video many assert glorifies domestic violence. Criticism aside — the track is a definite standout from the past few months of summer music.
“In a not entirely surprising development, Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” took home a huge portion of the total vote, with 56 percent of all the endorsements falling on the side of the chart-topping track. Since the song features a guest appearance by Rihanna, many of the people voting for the song also demanded an appearance by the singer, noting that they have not gotten the opportunity to perform the song on television yet, and considering it was one of the biggest hits of the summer, it would be an appropriate tag-team on a show so heavily focused on collaboration.”
The opening slot for the VMAs is always reserved for pop culture icons. Over the years, we have seen acts like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Britney Spears. While Eminem has consistently had a noticeable presence at the VMAs — winning numerous awards — he has never performed as the opening act. Regardless of Eminem performing the contentious ‘Love the Way You Lie’ as the opener — this particular year at the VMAs, promises to be unforgettable to say the least.
