The Emmy Awards 2010 countdown has now begun. The first Emmy Awards 2010 winners were crowned this weekend, but the big prizes will be handed out in six days. When the show starts, the supporting actors and actresses won’t have that long to wait, as their categories usually go first. For the best supporting players in comedy, who often get bigger laughs than their shows’ leads, they will hope the judges cracked enough smiles for their tapes. In those races, one frontrunner is already among the Emmy Awards 2010 winners, and another was pretty much handed the award months ago.
In the Best Supporting Comedy Actor category, the members of Modern Family have swarmed the field. Submitting in the same category paid off for everyone but Ed O’Neill, as co-stars Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet and Jessie Tyler Ferguson pushed him out.
However, if the Emmy Awards 2010 have these co-stars cancel each other out, there are other favorites. The obvious one is Neil Patrick Harris, who has been considered overdue for a Best Supporting Actor win for years. Yet he is not starving for awards this year, as he won two this weekend for guest starring on Glee, and for hosting the Tonys.
Harris will still be the favorite for No. 3 in the same year, although How I Met Your Mother was considered to have a mediocre season. If the Emmy Awards 2010 judges feel that they’ve honored Harris enough already, Jon Cryer can step in for a second upset win in a row. Meanwhile, Gleeks around the world will hope it is Chris Colfer’s turn instead, after his surprise nomination.
If Colfer doesn’t win, the Emmy Awards 2010 winners are still likely to include one Glee cast member. The Best Supporting Comedy Actress category has been written off as the night’s most suspense-free race, thanks to Sue Sylvester herself.
Jane Lynch is the virtually unanimous favorite in the category, since she is the most beloved part of Glee, other than the music. Given that she submitted the episode with her “Vogue” homage, it was the last nail in the coffin.
Nevertheless, the Emmy Awards 2010 still had to send five more nominees to challenge Lynch. Modern Family had a big showing here as well, with Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara getting in. But there was still room for Holland Taylor, Jane Krakowski and Kristen Wiig to rack up another nomination, although they’re expected to be shut out again.
The Emmy Awards 2010 winners in the supporting comedy categories are largely expected to be Lynch and Harris. But, although Lynch may not be challenged, Harris could still come up empty in this category again. However, which Modern Family member would take it instead, assuming Cryer doesn’t sneak up again? That will be a notable question to start the show, and an early test on whether Modern Family will have a big night ahead.
