Each year visitor’s flock to the gardens and home to view the wide variety of flowers displayed throughout the 65 acre estate, located in Theodore, Alabama. Tourists can experience the array of camellias in the winter to over 250,000 azaleas in the spring. Bellingrath Gardens is in full bloom year-round, but never looking the same, leaving the landscape always rejuvenated.
The estate offers nine different views located throughout the 65 acre gardens.
Bellingrath Rose Garden – The award-winning rose garden pays tribute to the civic involvement of Walter Bellingrath. The garden contains more than 2,000 roses in 75 varieties.
The Great Lawn – The Great Lawn is a large open expanse that is planted with seasonal grass which stays green year-round.
Fountain Plaza – This part of Bellingrath Gardens makes for picture-perfect backdrop to take family photos.
The Formal Terraces – This area is the most popular location for outdoor wedding ceremonies in the garden.
The Grotto / Riverfront – With a cascading waterfall and beautiful riverfront location, the Grotto is a popular spot at Bellingrath Gardens.
The Rockery– The Rockery has become one of the most photographed locations in the gardens.
Bayou Boardwalk – Exxon Mobil Ecological Bayou Boardwalk, where local wildlife abounds.
Mirror Lake – Mirror Lake attracts bird lovers with its graceful swans and Canadian geese, while colorful tulips surround the shoreline.
The Asian American Garden – This is a newer addition to the gardens that was not present during Bellingrath’s time.
The Bellingrath Home was built in 1935, and is 10,500 square feet. The home represents an English Renaissance style and includes all the original furniture. You can take a guided tour of the home; there is an extra charge to view the home.
Bellingrath Gardens also offers a 45-minute cruise along the Fowl River aboard the Southern Belle. The Southern Belle departs daily from Bellingrath Gardens and Home between March and November. You can relax and enjoy the wildlife or just enjoy a public dinner cruise that departs on Friday and Saturday nights in February through November and nightly during December.
One of the most popular holiday traditions not to be missed is the” Magic Christmas in Lights” display. People of all ages will marvel at the sight and sound of over 3 million spectacular lights with a dazzling display of animated figures.
