There is just something special and exciting about attending a midnight movie. For me personally, I have always been and will always be a true night person who literally comes alive when the lights go down. (No I am not of the Transylvania persuasion, just simply a person who functions better after sundown). There is also a rush of anticipation and camaraderie when you join together with another group of film buffs to watch and participate in the glory that is late night cinema. One of my favorite places to take in a flick day or night is the beloved pride and joy of Park Ridge, Illinois, the Pickwick Theatre.
The Pickwick Theatre is what the word classic is all about. The affluent and welcoming neighborhood is an ideal location to house this gorgeous, art deco theater which is located at 5 S. Prospect in Park Ridge, just steps away from Chicago’s northwest side. This is a great place to go for teens especially because it’s a safe area where parents can feel comfortable picking up and dropping off their children without fear of who or what is waiting for them when they come out of the midnight theater romp. The Pickwick is also a favorite place to see a film because the Pickwick Restaurant is right next door which is a convenient and taste bud pleasing diner to grab a snack before the show.
You could go and watch a midnight film at a modern, state-of-the-art theater with all the latest gadgets and eye popping designs, but for people who really appreciate the good old days of movie houses, it doesn’t get better than the Pickwick. The ceilings are huge and ornate, the seats are (kind of on the smaller side) but comfy and still cushy and the popcorn and soda are a little cheaper than the downtown Chicago multiplex theaters. This theater has been around since 1928 and it exudes charm and boasts a wonderful history of cinema. The outside marquee looks like something from a Frank Capra movie. The midnight films take on a whole different dimension when you are sitting in a true beauty like the Pickwick. She may be old, but she’s still got lots of sass and she deserves your undivided movie-lovin’ attention!
In 2010, the Pickwick featured some very popular films which drew huge crowds to fill the 1,400 seat theater: “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” premiere party was held there in June, 2010. A couple of the stars of Eclipse appeared to sign autographs and take photos with fans before the debut of the film at midnight. And fans of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” showed up in full force for the midnight screening in November. I’m not certain whether the ‘Team Edward/Team Jacob’ fans or the devotees of that charming, bespectacled wizard boy are more enthusiastic and passionate about their heroes, but I’m sure they all had a memorable time working it out on the big screen at the Park Ridge Theatre. www.pickwicktheatre.com/
