Colorado seems to be no saturation point for new local breweries in Fort Collins, Equinox Brewing Co will be added to the Colorado microbrewery list.
Equinox Brewing Co. is located on Remington Street which is perpendicular to Coppersmith Brewing Co. in the Historic Old Downtown shopping area of Fort Collins. They opened their brewery in April of 2010 and they are all ready making a name for themselves with their beers being tapped at local bars and restaurants. Equinox has recently won medals for their beers at the Great American Brew Festival.
Colin Westcot is owner and head brewer of Equinox Brewing. He brewed at the Kettlehouse Brewing in Montana before becoming head brewer at the Midnight Sun Brewery in Alaska for eight years. Him and his wife moved to Fort Collins a few years ago and opened a homebrew shop, Hops and Berries. They bought the building and opened their microbrewery next door.
Equinox Brewing had seven beers on tap and a hand pull cask conditioned beer at the time I visited. The seven beers were;
Sunrise Golden Ale, which is 5.25% alcohol and it, had a crisp, smooth, and light taste.
Vernal Hefeweizen is an unfiltered wheat beer that is 4.9% alcohol was very refreshing with banana and spice undertones.
Zenith IPA has that hop bitterness associated with Indian Pale Ale with citrus overtones. It is 6% alcohol.
Midsummer Pale is 5.15% alcohol and has that hop bitterness.
Orbit ESB wasn’t one of my favorites so I don’t have a review for it.
Randy’s Brown Porter is 5% alcohol with roasted hops had that toasted first sip, also has a hint of coffee.
Randy’s was also on Cask, which made the beer smoother with less of that hard edge as the carbonated Porter.
Lunar Tripel is their strongest ale at 8.25% alcohol. It was light, spicy but didn’t have that strong alcohol taste.
Equinox Brewing has a motto of sharing their recipes which are scaled down for the home brewer as a way of promoting their beers.
The tap house is warm and inviting with local artists works hanging on the walls. The bartender was friendly and answered our questions about their beer. The wooden bar seats around 7 people with tables situated around the front room plus tables in the adjacent overflow room. At the time they had just opened their beer garden.
Equinox Brewing Co. will be the next watering hole to have a pint of beer and a place to get to know the locals.
Open Tuesday – Saturday 12pm – 8pm
